PRE-PROHIBITION AMERICAN FIGURAL FISH SHAPED WHISKEY FLASK LATE 1800’s RARE PRE-PROHIBITION FIGURAL FISH SHAPED AMERICAN FOLK ART WHISKEY FLASK HANDMADE BY FOUST WHISKEY DISTILERY, GLEN ROCK,  PENSYLVANIA / RARE MINTY CONDITION / CIRCA LATE 1800’s Figural bottles are top of the line for bottle collectors, and especially so if hand painted and a novelty fish flask carried with Whiskey, a popular elixir that common companion of the fishing pastime that could be carried and shared with a fishing buddy. This is a scarce pre-prohibition figural Folk Art Whiskey flask, hand blown into a mold and hand painted, by the renown Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey distiller, Foust, of Glen Rock, PA. Dimensions are 8 3/4“L X 2 3/4” tall x 1 1/4” thick, weight is 6.7 ounces or 192 grams. The fish has the distinctive eye of a Walleye Pike fish. This scarce hand painted figural whiskey flask has a dark blue paint on the top that transitions to a turquoise coloration in the middle and transitions into a light grey color at the bottom. Almost all of the original paint remains, which is a rare feature; and this is the best example I have seen. The original metal cap has the original cork insert, and has untouched, original naturally aged patina inside and on the flask threads. When held up to the light, the glass inside is clear. This would be perfect for any bottle, flask, figural, Whiskey, American Folk Art collector, or display in a den, office, man cave. NOTE: The flask metal stand in the images is NOT for sale and is used for display purposes only. There are many inexpensive clear V shaped plastic mounts available for any size or shape of collectible. PENNSYLVANIA WHISKEY Whiskey distilling from rye and corn was a profitable business in the lower counties of Pennsylvania from the 1780’s to well into the 19th century.  And during that period, York and Lancaster counties exceeded all other Eastern Pennsylvania areas combined. As early as 1796 there were hardware stores that used a copper still as a sign in front of the store. Whiskey distilled in Lancaster County was mostly taken east to be sold in Philadelphia and Wilmington, while York County distillers sold nearly all of their product in Baltimore to the south. Transportation during the early 1800s was usually by large Conestoga wagons that originated in Lancaster County, drawn by four or six horses. Each wagon could carry four hogsheads (each about a hundred and fifty gallons) of whiskey. Even in the early 1800’s, though, there was a significant difference in the prices received for corn and rye whiskey. Corn whiskey of fairly good quality sold in Baltimore for twenty cents a gallon. For some of the best rye whiskey the distiller could get up to eighty cents a gallon. It seems likely that the corn whiskey was raw and the rye whiskey fetching four times the price was aged. By the early 1900’s, nearly all commercial distilling in the area was rye whiskey, and York County was home to only six working distilleries; all of which produced aged rye whiskey. Among them was that of William Foust in Glen Rock., a community located about fifteen miles from York, Pennsylvania. Foust Distillery was located in Glen Rock, Pennsylvania and produced Rye Whiskey which was considered America’s first great whiskey that was popular before Kentucky Bourbon. Foust was a rye whiskey distillery known for high quality whiskey. Built in 1858, the Foust distillery was located in a hollow about a mile or so north of town, although he later built an extension facility within Glen Rock, near the railroad station. The distillery was an elaborate affair, with a six-story warehouse and a company town, Foustown, complete with housing, a railroad station, period state-of-the-art communications (a telephone line) and even a town square with a decorative water fountain. The distillery processed as much as 3,000 barrels annually prior to shutting down. Foust was one of the last distilleries to produce Pennsylvania Whiskey, which was considered America’s first great Whiskey. Some sources say the distillery closed in 1907; other sources say it was due to prohibition. Regardless, this piece is pre-prohibition, and is believed to be from the late 1800’s. After prohibition was repealed, an attempt was made to refit the distillery for producing industrial alcohol during World War II, but the war ended before production could be started. The Foust brand was acquired by the Sherwood Distillery in nearby Westminster, Maryland, and apparently continued to bottle Foust and several other of their brands.
